Momentary Purpose
Thoughts From Our Spiritual Director, David Guthrie, April 25, 2010

Last week we considered the basic request of Spirit to serve. Serve God first, in every moment and in every aspect of our lives. To repeat the number one commandment of the Master Jesus from Luke 10.27, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength, and with all your mind; and your neighbor as yourself.” We go into the silence through prayer and meditation and discern the personally relevant Truths that these simple words evoke. The meanings of these few words profoundly alter our Consciousness, and as our Consciousness shifts, so does the appearance of our physical realm. As we gain more clarity of our Spiritual reality our sense of purpose becomes less obscure. We begin to live our lives “on purpose” as opposed to drifting from thought to word to action with no sense of direction.

Jesus Christ teaches purpose in a most dramatic and poignant setting. In several quotations throughout the Gospels we hear Jesus speaking of his mission culminating in a demonstration of eternality. In Matthew 26 we hear Jesus in a very human way pleading with God to allay his inevitable end. “And going a little farther, he threw himself on the ground and prayed, ‘My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from me; yet not what I want but what you want.’” The writer of John quotes Jesus as saying, “Now my soul is troubled. And what should I say—‘Father, save me from this hour’? No, it is for this reason that I have come to this hour.” (John 12.27).

One of the great attributes of the Master Teacher and Way Shower was his unwavering commitment to his purpose. The emotions displayed in these passages indicate clearly that he did not want his human life to end. He was a strong and vital man. We can only imagine the Presence of joy and Peace Jesus exuded. We can only pray that we too feel the same Power of God with which Jesus was filled in every moment. Each of us holds dearly to our precious physical existence. Take a moment and feel into the Presence of Christ and attempt to sense the brilliant Life energy that Jesus experienced, and understand the magnitude of wonder and exhilaration that animated this Spiritual Master. Throwing himself on the ground and praying in anguish for relief from the murderous execution he acquiesces to the Divine Guidance that he has discerned. Jesus knew that

he could not deny his purpose, even when it meant the demise of his physical body. With his heart heavy with the prophesy of death, he stands firmly in Faith and claims his destiny in the moment.

Many of us seek an overriding purpose in life, one that creates a path that makes sense and feels productive. Some of us find this purpose. Many do not. Yet it is not the umbrella of a lifelong mission we truly need to live satisfying and full lives. Perhaps too much emphasis is placed on job and career orientation and too little placed on the momentary purpose of being kind.

It is true that the clearer we are in our Spiritual nature, the more Order we experience in our lives. When we begin to sense the Divine Intelligence that orders all Life as the Substance behind everything, we have the opportunity to order our thoughts in alignment with Divine Mind. It is this realization of the Divine Intelligence back of all appearances that brings Peace to our lives. And in Peace, we develop focus of momentary purpose, the purpose to be compassionate and loving in this moment, then the next, and the next.

It matters not what we are “doing” in any given moment. We may desire to claim that we are living our Soul’s purpose, or some other grand proclamation. It only matters that we are acknowledging the grand order of Divine Intelligence, experiencing the clarity that evolves from this recognition, gaining Peace from the humility derived from sensing the Presence and allowing the resulting focus to sharpen our awareness of Christ. Utilizing this process, we become kind, filled with joy, humble in our Power, nonjudgmental, and Loving. We find our moment to moment purpose: being the best Christ we can be.

I pray: In humble gratitude, I claim my Christhood. I am Light. I am joy. I am Power. I am kind, compassionate and Loving. I am Good, and I find my purpose every moment in the clarity of Spirit. And all is well. 04/25/10
